Morning News Round-Up -- 11.05.08: Election Stuff and Other News Too...

Election Stuff
Assuming Watch Dog readers haven't been sleeping -- some of the big news you probably knew. Obama won big nationally. But not as big as he won locally. Here are the San Mateo County results -- because I know you've been waiting for them:
Barack Obama: 156,571 (74%)
John McCain: 52,353 (25%)
The San Mateo Chapter of the NAACP hosted a jubilent election night party to celebrate.

Menlo Park: Incumbents Kelly Fergusson and Andy Cohen won reelection -- staving off a bid from Richard Ciardella.

Atherton: In what can only be called Watch Dog's most high-profile race, the Atherton City Council race is finally over...Incumbent Kathy McKeithen won reelection and Elizabeth Lewis was also elected. (The two were followed by Richard Moore and David Henig respectively.) Watch Dog loves Atherton and looks forward to following the shenanigans into the future.

Redwood City: Proving that voters know BS when the see it, both the measures in Redwood City (W and V) failed. It was clearly a nasty election -- but voters are pretty smart. This issue won't go away, however. There are big land use decisions to come in Redwood City -- and Watch Dog will follow closely.

East Palo Alto: The East Palo Alto City Council will change a bit. Incumbent Peter Evans won reelection with Carlos Romero and Laura Martinez also winning seats.

School Measures: There were a number of school measures on the ballot yesterday. Bayshore, Belmont-Redwood Shores, and San Carlos elementary school districts had parcel taxes that needed 2/3 to pass. All but San Carlos's did. Millbrae had a bond measure on the ballot (Watch Dog's favorite -- Measure X) and it passed.

Palo Alto Libraries: The Palo Alto library bond (Measure N) won.

BART (Santa Clara County): For the City Council in Palo Alto, who were divided on the BART sales tax increase issue, the results will please some and anger others. It is currently failing. Needing 2/3 -- it is right now .4 percentage points behind. Yikes. There are still ballots to be counted and Santa Clara County isn't nearly as with it at Warren Slocum -- so it might take a while.

...and there is some other news too...
The County Supervisors grilled County Treasurer Lee Buffington yesterday about the Investment Pool. Nobody is happy with Lehman Brothers and it seems many folks are taking that out on Buffington. Action is slated for January or February, but some some local officials that don't directly oversee the Treasurer are calling for more immediate reaction -- like Mayor Rosanne Faust in Redwood City.

Palo Alto is considering limiting the use of plastic bags by grocery stores. Joining the growing club.
