Morning News Round-Up -- 11.12.08: Another Election on the Horizon?

You thought the political campaign was over? It's just beginning. With Supervisor Jerry Hill's election to the State Assembly, a seat becomes available on the Board of Supervisors. Two folks have announced their intention to run: Mayor of San Mateo Carole Groom and former Clerk of the Board of Supervisors Richard Silver. Groom is seen as the favorite, perhaps because Silver just moved into town from Sacramento last month. There seems to still be a question as to whether it will be an appointment or election -- as the cost for the election is likely to be close to $2 million.

Congresswoman Eshoo supports San Mateo County, and other Counties, being part of the Federal bailout. This is in addition to the County seeking money from the bankruptcy proceedings of Lehman Brothers and suing the company and its executives directly.

The San Mateo post office will be renamed after Congressman Leo J. Ryan. The Jonestown incident is still fresh in many San Mateo County folks minds 30 years later. Two local civic leaders were part of the story then and now.

The statistics of Palo Alto Police stops are out there. The first sentence of the story should tell you something: "One in every 50 Palo Alto residents is black, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. But one in every seven drivers pulled over in the city is black, according to quarterly demographic data collected by the police department."

In an unrelated story (so far), Palo Alto police found gang graffiti on a fence near Edgewood Plaza. Let's see if the Chief can keep her mouth shut on this...

A house in Millbrae had a fire yesterday. Perhaps it could be more accurately described as going "Up in Smoke"...

John Mays at the Daily Journal calls for reconciliation following the combative elections.

Pacifica School District looks to keep teachers in their schools by helping out with the cost of housing.

Currently, if you go to San Mateo Union High School District schools and you get crappy grades, you can still participate in sports and clubs. That may change.

From church to office building. That's what is going to happen to the Christian Scientist church on the corner of Bryant Street and Forest Avenue in Palo Alto.

I would like to thank all who voted for me for the 19th Assembly District! I am almost 6,000 votes, sure to pass it by next week's update.
I look forward to keeping an eye on Jerry Hill's next two years as Assemblyman. I hope he introduces bills to expand our liberties instead of eroding them.
I will continue the defend the liberties we hold dear!

Thanks again,
Brian Perry
