Morning News Round-Up -- 11.18.08: "Suda-Clari-Ny-Muci-Quil" Edition...

Belmont Vice Mayor Bill Dickenson will stand trial starting today on domestic violence charges. The incident in question occurred at Dickenson's and his ex-girlfriend's restaurant, Destinations. Which, amazingly, is what the Belmont City Council would like to make downtown Belmont, as reported earlier this week. Today's story also reminds us all of this gem: "Dickenson was also arrested by San Francisco police in May on suspicion of sexual assault but the District Attorney’s Office never filed charges."

In an unrelated story...a convicted batterer that was mistakenly(?) released from custody is now heading to trial on new charge of failing to appear in court.

The Daily Journal's Michelle Durand's "Off the Beat" describes her gripe with being a grown-up and being under the weather. She did make up a cool word: Suda-Clari-Ny-Muci-Quil.

There is a new Mayor in Burlingame. Ann Keighran was sworn in last night, just in time for her to break the bad news -- or at least reiterate the bad news. Cuts in service, dropping revenues from sales tax, and unfunded liabilities in the tens of millions. Sounds like a great time to be Mayor -- congratulations.

Caltrain is looking to electrify their trains on the Peninsula, and they hope the new high-speed rail project passed by voters will help cover the costs...

Another woman got her backpack snatched on Saturday in Palo Alto. Instead of anyone trying to describe the robber, lest anyone try put their foot in their mouth, there is just a sketch of what the guy looked like. The Police think this guy is responsible for multiple, recent robberies.

The same folks on the Palo Alto City Council that were excited that Measure B, the BART measure, failed to reach the 2/3 threshold on election day are probably pretty pissed today that it looks like Measure B will pass -- after late vote counting seems be pushing the measure for passage.
