(slightly rain delayed) Morning News Round-Up -- 2.6.09: Let the Campaign in Burlingame Begin...

The campaign has officially begun in Burlingame! The folks in Burlingame are starting their campaign for residents to cough up the cash and vote yes on a ballot measure in May for upgrading and improving their drainage system. They took reporters (and others?) on a tour of the 'dilapidated' storm drain system' this week. (Watch Dog's invite must have gotten lost in the email...) Here is a quote that let's you know that the campaign is in full swing -- as delivered by the Burlingame Public Works Director Syed Murtuza, “At this point, it’s really a disaster waiting to happen...” So if you vote no, you are courting disaster...Who will be the first good-government Watch Dog to point out that these public employees were campaigning on government time?...

Here is a weird story: The manager of Roti in downtown Burlingame (love it!), was arrested for stealing customers' credit card information and using it to buy stuff at his wife's check out counter at the deli at Safeway in South San Francisco. How, exactly, did they think they wouldn't get caught?

Those loud cheers your heard over the honk of the CalTrain horn this morning were cyclist who are getting more space on trains...in April. Congrats cyclists -- you had a grievance, you got it heard, and you got it (partially) addressed. Now, about those tights...

Here is a bit of news from the education front that doesn't have to do with budget cuts. In fact, it is good news. CaƱada College and College of San Mateo both got their accredidation reaffirmed by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. They were both in danger of losing their accredidation last year. Congrats folks...

The Mirabella project in Foster City is a big issue on the far side of 101. Some folks think it is a great project -- but a vocal group of neighbors thinks it is too big and will cause too much traffic. The public comment period for the draft Environmental Impact Report ends today. Did you get your comments in? These folks did...

The Hillsborough City School District is going to lose its Superintendent next year. After 34 years of service to the District, Marily Loushin-Miller is retiring. Perhaps she saw the (budget) writing on the (State) wall and thought that now was a pretty good time to get the heck out...

If you live in Palo Alto, your electricity rates are (probably) going up by double digits in July.

Now, a garbage story that has nothing to do with new vendors, Jerry Hill, or rates: In Menlo Park, a man waved a gun at a garbage man and was arrested a few hours later...

Our final story comes from the Watch Dog on the Media Department: Pacifica Riptide, Watch Dog's favorite Coastside blog, sends its best wishes to the Pacifica Tribune. The Tribune is apparently going to through tough times that include "furloughs and other issues." Watch Dog has a feeling that one of these Pacifica institutions will survive (Riptide) and one may not (Tribune)...
