Morning News Round-Up -- 9.3.09: The good news: Carlmont traffic was fixed, The bad news: it still sucks...
Skyline College remains closed today after one student was shot in the butt. Thankfully, nobody was killed, but the gunman is still on the loose. A shooting and a bombing all in one month in San Mateo schools. Yikes.

More than 1,000 people showed up to Congresswoman Anna Eshoo's town hall meeting on health care reform. Apparently, people booed and cheered in equal amounts…

SamTrans is sparing the Coastside from losing its bus routes after all. No word on how East Palo Also will be affected or not.

Seems that money isn’t an issue in Woodside elections. Despite the fact that all three candidates are running unopposed, the Council decided to go ahead and shell out the $12 grand to hold an election so that residents can actually vote the three unopposed candidates into office. Watch Dog likes this a lot more than appointing a Supervisor for a decade without an election... hint, hint.

Morning News Round-Up -- 7.31.09: "I had pony"... in Menlo Park
Belmont City Manager Jack Crist is encouraging the City Council to hop the lawsuit bandwagon against the State led by the California Redevelopment Association. Belmont laments that the State is raiding its Redevelopment Agency, resulting in a $2.8 million loss. He told the Daily Journal that there is strong evidence that the “heist” is illegal. Regardless, it’s crippling Belmont’s rockin' downtown.
The Daily Journal reports that a four-alarm fire that consumed South San Francisco salami plant last week left 34 of the factory’s 95 employees unemployed. More importantly, the blaze destroyed 200,000 pounds of deli meats. It’s not likely a disgruntled employee or a vegetarian started the fire. Fire Marshal Luis Da Silva says arson has been ruled out.
The Exotic Erotic Ball that skipped town last year is returning to the Cow Palace in October with its costumes, exotic dancers, and adult movie stars. The Ball's organizers (no pun intended) are expecting a healthy turnout of more than 30,000 people over the two days.
San Carlos resident Vivian Heinzel gets to choose between a $2.4 million house near San Francisco's Golden Gate Park or take a cool $1.8 million in cash as her grand prize in the "San Francisco Dream House Raffle," a four-month fundraising event sponsored by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Watchdog thinks she should take the cash and replace the burned salami in SSF -- or perhaps buy us all tickets to the Exotic Erotic Ball.

Resident Sara Hassani, who has been following transit issues in South County, made astute observation: "There would be no way for people in East Palo Alto to get to the Palo Alto Caltrain. There are also no grocery stores in East Palo Alto.”
Palo Alto husband and wife have been charged in federal court in San Jose with ripping off a computer networking company when they submitted more than $80,000 worth of false claims for rebates, the paloaltoline reported.
This is for the horse lovers out there: More than 500 equestrians, including 2008 Olympic gold medalist Will Simpson, plan to compete in the 39th Menlo Charity Horse Show, set for Aug. 4 through 9 at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton, according to the Almanac.
In case you couldn’t get enough… BART and its labor unions are dragging out their transit drama. The two entities bargained through the wee hours of the morning today in hopes of reaching agreements that would save the transit agency millions and dodge a commute-crippling strike, the Chronicle says.
Cities everywhere are screwed when it comes paying their part of retirement benefits... Now its Palo Alto’s turn. According to the Mercury News, the projected cost of medical benefits for retired Palo Alto City employees has increased 28 percent in two years. Meanwhile, the City’s trust fund for paying those benefits has lost millions. The reason? It’s not just rising cost. More people are retiring from the City than expected.

Millbrae is in the middle of an "all mail" election (which is very different than an all male election) to renew its fire assessment tax. If that doesn't pass, the financial outlook for Millbrae looks a lot worse, according to Mayor Gottschalk at his State of the City address yesterday.
A Daily Journal Editorial chimes in on the school-site battle raging between the San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District and the City of Foster City. Watch Dog has written about this before, and we both agree and disagree with the Daily Journal. We agree that the issue should be resolved by conversations between the City and the School District, but we disagree with the City's stand, thus far.

San Mateo County's local airport is getting $15 million of new baggage screening equipment thanks to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who was in town for the photo-shoot/announcement.
It looks like San Mateo need not start looking for a new Police Chief. San Francisco's search for a new Chief seems to be winding down (in typical San Francisco fashion) but Susan Manheimer doesn't seem to be in the running anymore...
You think schools have it bad during this Great Recession, developers are also taking it on the chin. (Can you hear the violin music?) Greenbriar Homes, who were going to build 37 homes as part of the Alma Plaza project in Palo Alto, backed out of the deal. The future of the Alma Plaza project is now uncertain...
Thank goodness we can soon start covering politics as well as bad economic times... In Palo Alto, there will be a City Council race. Karen Holman just threw her hat in the ring. Holman is a Planning and Transportation Commissioner. She joins School Board member Gail Price in the election. So here is the breakdown about what the current City Council will be doing: Jack Morton and Yoriko Kishimoto are termed out (Kishimoto is running for Assembly), Larry Klein is not running again, and incumbents John Barton and Peter Drekmeier will likely run for re-election. So that means there will be three open seats and four people running, if Watch Dog's math is correct... It should be interesting.

Morning News Round-Up -- 3.4.09: The Life of the Wealthy and Influential...
The yearly ritual of pink slips to teachers starts next week. There are generally more pink slips given out than layoffs forthcoming, but the idea of teachers getting pink slips underlines how screwed up California is. Sorry Terminator Schwarzenegger, it's true...The California Teachers Association is marking the day of reckoning with their own website: Pink Friday 09.
One of the inherent inequities in California schools is that wealthier communities are able to privately fundraise while less-well-off Districts struggle in that department. On this front, the Partners in Education organization in Palo Alto is giving the Palo Alto Unified School District a check for $2.57 million this week...
In Belmont, there is a "Chronic flasher on the loose." The headline pretty much says it all...except that he also robbed a woman in a residential parking garage.
Easy come, easy go for Dr. Sang-Ick Chang, the CEO of the San Mateo Medical Center after only 18 months at the helm. While there is PR explanation why he is leaving to go take a lesser post as Chief Medical Offier at the Alameda County Medical Center...but the real reason is hinted at in the story: the County consolidated much of its healthcare functions last year and added a layer of bureaucracy over Dr. Chang's head. Easy come, easy go for Dr. Sang-Ick Chang, the CEO of the San Mateo Medical Center after only 18 months at the helm. While there is PR explanation why he is leaving to go take a lesser post as Chief Medical Offier at the Alameda County Medical Center...but the real reason is hinted at in the story: the County consolidated much of its healthcare functions last year and added a layer of bureaucracy over Dr. Chang's head. - The Palo Alto Weekly is (finally?) giving us all a blogger that (perhaps?) will update more regularly than Jay Thorwaldson...Keith Schuman is a Palo Alto dude who took off when the economy tanked and will be traveling (and blogging) around the world. - PP Examiner gives another look to the 21st Assembly District race with the new addition of Palo Alto's Yoriko Kishimoto. While not giving Watch Dog credit, the PP Examiner does admit that more voters will come from the Santa Clara County section of the District rather than San Mateo -- which is different than PP's first post on this issue. Watch Dog wrote about that same issue a while ago...The PP Examiner also changed its look a bit.
- A developer wants to build an office/hotel complex at the intersection of Marsh Road and 101 in eastern Menlo Park. How do we know? Well, it was reported in the Almanac. How does the Almanac know? Because the developer, David Bohannon, did a poll and folks got a bit freaked out...

- The advantages of being a Gubernatorial candidate from Atherton...Meg Whitman made a $1,000,000 contribution to her own campaign yesterday. "Writing that check is so much easier than having those pesky fundraisers," Whitman didn't say. "My hand did get tired from writing zeros, however..."
