Morning News Round-Up -- 11.13.08: Censorship in UnAmerican Edition...

You'll remember that the student paper at Carlmont High School was shut down. The Administration said it was because the paper didn't have a faculty advisor and the students at the paper thought it was because of inappropriate content. The inappropriate content argument is illegal -- so it seems everyone is working to get the paper back up and running in January. The Superintendent of the Sequoia Union High School District calls the whole thing a: "Teachable moment..." Others would call the whole thing a censorship moment...If these students want to publish on a blog for a while, head over here and Watch Dog will hook you up.

A ballot measure for San Bruno schools that was slated for March has been pulled from the ballot by the Board of Trustees because parents wouldn't get on board.

The Millbrae home that went "up in smoke" yesterday was followed by the police confiscating 370 pot plants from the home. Does this mean that Cheech and Chong's Millbrae weed hook up will be dry for a while?

The newspaper thief pleaded guilty yesterday and will pay $146 as a penalty. You'll remember that in September Erik John Olarte Nunez stole San Francisco Examiner papers from their box as he was delivering Daily Post newspapers. When he was caught, he had "hundreds of copies of the Examiner, Daily News, and Daily Journal." Oops...

The bridge over 101 that you've been driving under in Burlingame will open to the public next Friday. Get ready for "Impeach Bush" and "Hope" signs to follow shortly after...

This story isn't funny, but the headline is. "Pedestrian hit by a Prius in downtown Palo Alto" You never see the type of vehicle that was involved in an accident listed in the headline. Imagine, "A Toyota Camry hits a Honda Civic on El Camino..." It would never happen. I guess Priuses are special.

Crab fisherman in Half Moon Bay are not optimistic about the upcoming season.

The race for Pacifica City Council ended in somewhat surprising fashion. Incumbent Cal Hinton lost his seat to challenger Mary Ann Nihart while incumbent Pete DeJarnatt retained his seat.

Watch Dog, you rock! As a former high school journalist who experienced firsthand censorship from administrators I applaud your generosity to the Carlmont High students.

I look forward to reading all about the news at CHS from Watch Dog San Mateo.

Yes, Prii are special. Plural of the Latin.

Student newspapers are really important.

Administrators don't like them -- which is reason enough to keep them going.

Plus, how else would Brandon have learned his craft?
