Early this year, with the help of the PP Examiner, we wrote about potential candidates to replace soon-to-be-termed-out Assemblymember Ira Ruskin. The PP Examiner ran through the list of San Mateo County-based candidates (Supervisor Rich Gordon, et al) saying that those folks had the best shot at the seat. Watch Dog disagreed...and now a Santa Clara County candidate emerges -- former Palo Alto City Councilmember/Mayor Yoriko Kishimoto. The old San Mateo Police Station is going to be a mix of affordable and market rate housing as the Police pack their boxes in order to move to the new station near Franklin Parkway and Hillsdale Blvd.
The City of San Mateo feels a bit differently than the High-Speed Rail naysayers in parts of Palo Alto, Atherton, and Menlo Park. They like the idea of the fast train coming through downtown -- but only if it doesn't cut downtown San Mateo into two parts. San Mateo Public Works Director Larry Patterson (while stating the obvious) put his thumb on everyone's real challenge: "It’s easy to say, ‘Sure, we support high-speed rail. It is good for California.’ It gets harder when it starts running through your neighborhoods..." No kidding...John Horgan in the County Times chimes in with a "time to get real" piece...Palo Alto doesn't take Horgan's advice and may sue the High-Speed Rail Authority because they are mad as hell and they aren't going to take it anymore (according to yesterday's march...)
You know things are heated in a community forum when someone is slapped with a 30-day restraining order. That's what happened to Gary Holl following a community meeting/fight in Palo Alto. It used to be such a civil place...
You may remember this Palo Alto story -- a police lieutenant was moonlighting as a security consultant for Palo Alto-based Page Mill Properties which brought difficult questions to a Police Department that has had its share of difficult questions recently. Well, Lieutenant Tim Morgan stepped down from the Palo Alto Police Department. They are losing key personnel faster than Spansion...
The timing is (apparently) right in Palo Alto to go to the ballot in November with a business license tax, which could affect businesses' bottom lines anywhere from $35 to $20,000 per year.
The Everest Charter School saga continues (not as long as the Garbage Saga has gone on, however). Remember the history, Summit Charter School in the Sequoia Union High School District wanted to open another Charter School in the District. District Trustees said no, so did the County Office of Education -- the first level of appeal for the denied Charter application. Then, the Everest Charter folks appealed to the State -- where it is looking like the Charter will get approved. In the midst of the appeal, the Sequoia Union folks began to see the writing on the wall and set aside some space in East Palo Alto for the eventual Everest Charter School. The Everest Charter School folks, however, don't seem to want to be in East Palo Alto and are complaining about the location, the facilities, and everything else...lawyers are involved -- so this could get even uglier...
Michelle Durand is also pissed in her "Off the Beat" column today in the Daily Journal. I mean it. She is talking about pee.
A few months ago, Foster City parents let the San Mateo-Foster City School District know that the growing number of kids in schools was cause enough for a new school to be built to house the growing student population. The School District listened -- and now the Foster City City Council is listening too. Foster City wants to help the School District find land for the proposed new school. Wow. Government agencies working together...what a concept.
Here is a Recession Repercussion story mixed with an Econ 101 story. Rents are dropping in the area as the economy takes its nose-dive and landlords are luring new tenants with decreased rents and move-in deals. This means that long-term tenants are often paying more than the new tenants, causing neighborly discontent...
School Districts on the coast are not doing much better financially than Districts on this side of the hill. This has been covered in the coastside news outlets previously and written about here too...
A man was robbed in his own home in Burlingame Sunday. The assailant used a stun-gun to subdue the victim...anyone with info call the Burlingame PD at 650/777-4100.
