Morning News Round-Up - 4.1.09: No kidding...

They could just use this headline everyday: Schools consider budget cuts, layoffs. This time, its the San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District and the target dollar amount to cut is $7 million over two years.

Not to be outdone, the County of San Mateo is considering $38 million in cuts and $30 million in deferred payments...those deferred payments "assume the state will be good to its word" -- according to (recently profiled) County Manager Dave Boesch...California? good to its word? See previous story...

Watch Dog (and everyone else) has written about the ongoing spat between Sequoia Union High School District and Everest Charter School. It started with the District giving a thumbs down to the Charter proposal. Now, it is more about where the District wants to put the school. The Charter finally got approved by a State Board and the District is now responsible for finding space for the Everest. The District wants to put Everest in 5 portable classrooms, and part of a permanent building, in East Palo Alto. Which seems ok with Watch Dog. After all, it isn't as if the District has lots of empty buildings lying around. But the Everest folks think East Palo Alto is a crappy place for their school and they want to be in Redwood City. Well guess what Everest...the District is making you its final offer in East Palo Alto. Watch Dog predicts the next several stories about the Sequoia Union High School District vs. Everest Battle will include lots of legal terms and lawyers names...

The Daily Journal's Editor Jon Mays pitches his idea for $500 grants to help the environment...the paper is partnering with San Mateo County Recycleworks for this program. Pretty cool stuff.

The window (for Mavericks Surf Contest) has been extended through April 8th -- so don't put away your wetsuit...yet.

More drama in Daly City. In addition to serving as Daly City's City Clerk, the apparent victim in Pay-Cut Gate, Annette Hipona, was also a member of the Jefferson Elementary School District's Board of Trustees. Hipona just announced that she will step down from the school board to focus on the City Clerk duties. Ironic, because she (and the District) were waiting to hear from the Attorney General about whether she was allowed to serve in both capacities.

More important than the Pay-Cut Gate story today, someone's grammar was way off in this piece: either Hipona, reporter Christine Morente, or the County Times Editor left their grammar checker off. (Watch Dog's money is on Hipona...) The story has this gem of a quote, commenting on the fact that it won't matter what the Attorney General says about Hipona serving in two elected capacities, because:

"It's now a mute point..."
Really? A mute point Ms. Hipona? Not a moot point?

Attention Palo Alto residents and businesses: Your electricity rates are going up. Well, they are at least one step closer to that reality because the City Council's Finance Committee said so last night. I guess the legal fees are mounting and need payment...

And if the legal fees for defending the Utility Department weren't enough, Palo Alto is also going to be spending money on other lawyers to fight High-Speed Rail through an Amicus Brief to the State Supreme Court...

Menlo Park is trying to do something pretty big about foreclosed homes. MP wants to buy an equity stake in low-income residents' homes to keep the residents there and keep the homes from falling into disrepair.

Pacifica Democrats love a good debate. On April 18th they will be hosting a forum on the new proposed $.01 sales tax increase in Pacifica. They'll meet at the Sharp Park Golf Course Restaurant, unless San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi has something to say about it...

Because Watch Dog has a blogmance (blog + romance = blogmance) with Riptide, we share this: a very personal story of how the closing of the Coastside Family Health Clinic is affecting folks in Pacifica, HMB, and the rest of coastal San Mateo County...

The Citizens of Woodside blog gets back in the game...this time talking about the Emerald Hills neighborhood of Woodside, and points Watch Dog to a previously undiscovered local blog: Emerald Hills Blog.
