Morning News Round-Up -- 5.18.09: The Vallejo of San Mateo County?

Oh no. Last week we (actually, the Half Moon Bay Review and others) filled you in on the failure of the Half Moon Bay Bailout Bill in Sacramento. Well, this Tuesday, the Half Moon Bay City Council will discuss what it means, and how to accomplish, Chapter 9 bankruptcy. A new motto for Half Moon Bay: "Welcome to Half Moon Bay, the Vallejo of San Mateo County..."

In a story that will have the Everest Charter School folks flipping out... Sequoia Union High School District's Superintendent Pat Gemma was named Superintendent of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators...

Downtown (San Mateo) Area Plan is due to be voted on Monday night at the San Mateo City Council meeting. Jon Mays likes it just the way it is... sort of like a (very) mini-Manhattan.

Oops... A teacher at Westborough Middle School in the South San Francisco Unified School District (allegedly) shared parts of the State science exams prior to the students actually taking test. That's one way to increase API scores...

The County is (still) planning to cut the wages of in-home health workers in (seeming) violation of the Federal stimulus plan... but the County need-not worry, the State is on the case...

Here is the "duh!" headline of the day: Peninsula Cities object to state borrowing property taxes... Really?

Thank goodness, a local story about something other than the dire financial situation. This one is about Foster City's (contentious) election plans for November. The term limit extension will be on the ballot and possibly something about City land for schools... let the fun begin...

Sue Lempert writes today in the Daily Journal. The most interesting/fun part of this piece is that she gives credit to Supervisor Rich Gordon for getting the County folks in front of Congressman Barney Frank, the head of the House Financial Services Committee. Why the slight to Eshoo and Speier, Sue?

In a mirror-image of this story that ran in Santa Clara County recently, the San Mateo County times goes into the different fees for putting in solar on the Peninsula... (Perhaps the story idea was picked up from Watch Dog Silicon Valley?)

Finally, the COWs of Woodside chime in on Steve Jobs' Demolition Job...
