Morning News Round-Up -- 10.28.09: The Bay Bridge is closed (seriously)...
Remember that Bay Bridge repair on Labor Day weekend. Y'know, that really important piece that they hadn't planned on fixing but saw a crack in when the Bay Bridge was closed and they fixed it. Well, it kind of broke last night. Don't worry though, Watch Dog can't see how having the Bay Bridge closed indefinitely could possibly screw things up throughout the Bay Area... (For all you very literal people out there, we are kidding. The Bay Area will be a traffic disaster for a while... stay in your pajamas, stay home, and log-in to work...)
In what has become one of the most written-about elections next week, Dave Boyce at the Almanac goes into even more detail about the Sequoia Union High School District Board race for two open seats. The Almanac Editorial pages support Chris Thomsen and Bob Ferrando... we'll see what happens Tuesday.
San Carlos's billboard/First Amendment issue took another turn yesterday. The guy who wants to promote Sarah Palin for President in 2012 (really?) will have to wait for at least 45 days while San Carlos's emergency moratorium on new billboards take effect.
Some SSF neighbors of a proposed pot club are none-too-pleased with the plan for a club down the street. Watch Dog just likes the fact that Heather Murtagh of the Daily Journal used the word "sparked" in the second sentence of her story today about a pot club...
The ever-efficient, always-helpful folks in Sacramento will be looking at the implications legalized marijuana would have on communities. Don't worry everyone, Assemblymember Tom Ammiano is leading the hearings...
A 13 year old boy brought a BB gun to school yesterday at Burlingame Intermediate. He must not have gotten the message that guns only belong at Skyline College...
The Daily Journal comes out in favor of Measure L in San Mateo. BUT, it isn't the strongest endorsement you'll ever read and it comes less than a week before election day, which means that a huge chunk of people have already voted. The Daily Journal also provides a run-down of all their campaign thoughts, at least in terms of local measures: F/Yes, H/Yes, I/Yes, J/Yes, K/Yes, L/Yes, M/Yes, (noticing a pattern?), O/Yes, U/Yes, V/Yes, W/Yes, X/Yes, Y/Yes... tough crowd at the Editorial Board at the Daily Journal...
Surprise, surprise. The Menlo Park City Council approval of a massive development, coupled with the stipulation that the development be "carbon neutral" wasn't as clear as it could have been.
Speaking of carbon neutral... Pacifica is banning Styrofoam. The earth thanks you Pacifica. And we thank Riptide for bringing us the news...
The COWs of Woodside are celebrating their 4th anniversary... by continuing their crusade... or is it a COWsade?

Here's a good headline from the County Times: San Mateo County dentists trying to keep kids from Halloween candy. They only thing more laughable would be a headline that read: San Mateo County patients trying to keep dentists away from golf courses.

Morning News Round-Up -- 10.6.09: See you later Burlingame Chief...
Bye, Bye, Burlingame Police Chief Jack Van Etten. He announced his retirement yesterday after serving the City for more than 36 years. City Manager Jim Nantell says he might be the last Chief to serve Burlingame?
If anyone has been hit hard by bad economic times, it’s the Fox Theater in Redwood City. The historic theater is being auctioned off in a few weeks. Sad.
Speaking of hard times, remember this guy?
Council candidates everywhere are really capitalizing on the bad economy. They all seem to have ideas about how to solve their City budget crisis. Note: Not possible in California.
Environmentalists are pissed after a developer bulldozed an endangered butterfly habitat on San Bruno Mountain. They plan to sue the company, which bulldozed legally, by the way.
Turns out that Germaine Benjamin, the Skyline College butt shooter, has a rap sheet. Not surprising.
The raccoon killers in Half Moon Bay say they didn’t mean to run over a group of 50 raccoons outside the Safeway grocery store. Police aren’t letting this one go just yet. On a related note, Coastside campers report fewer late night raccoon interuptions...

Morning News Round-up --9.10.09: Burlingame will see Christmas and Sunshine this year.
It’s official: SamTrans cut bus routes and raised fares. San Bruno, Millbrae and paratranist riders got screwed.
Forget about the recession….Christmas will live on in Burlingame this year. The city has decided to bring back the old tree lighting celebration at city hall, which was eliminated years ago because it was too expensive. But it’s not now?
San Mateo police Sgt. Dave Peruzzaro is getting the Medal of Valor, California’s highest honor for law enforcement. Peruzzaro was the cop who reached into a window of a home and rescued a 3-year-old boy from his mother who was being held hostage inside. Congrats!
A judge decided that Tyler Hutchinson, who is charged with beating to death 88-year-old Albert Korn, is healthy enough to stand trial. Hutchinson managed to get one last jab in when he spit on his attorney during the proceedings.
Here’s the latest chapter of the Page Mill Properties saga: the landlord might soon lose control of its 1,700 apartments in the Woodland Park neighborhood to a court-appointed receiver. Why? Wells Fargo in a statement said something about the quality life and safety of the residents living there are a priority.
If you are bored Saturday, Palo Alto is teaching residents about the design process for the high-speed rail train. It should kill about six hours of your day. Zzzzzz.
Burlingame city leaders have decided to ask elected officials and council appointees to make their contact information public to the public. Sunshine, sunshine.
Many Skyline College students said they didn’t hear the message that was announced on the PA system at the time of the shooting on campus. That’s because the PA system is only installed in the college's newer buildings. Hmmm.

Morning News Round-Up -- 9.3.09: The good news: Carlmont traffic was fixed, The bad news: it still sucks...
Skyline College remains closed today after one student was shot in the butt. Thankfully, nobody was killed, but the gunman is still on the loose. A shooting and a bombing all in one month in San Mateo schools. Yikes.

Burlingame seems to be the easiest place for minors to get their hands on alcohol. That's a good thing to promote: Burlingame, Where Kids Get Drunk...
East Palo Alto City Council passed a resolution condemning a recent court decision to allow 57-year-old Donald Robinson, a convicted rapist, to move into a home on Beech Street. Two words: Philip. Garrido.
San Carlos Mayor Bob Grassilli says increasing taxes is “normal.” We guess that definition of "normal" is relative -- and voters have a funny way of deciding what is normal Mayor Grassilli.
SFO closed security checkpoint for two hours after a “suspicious package” was found. Naturally it turned out not to be a threat. That's because the real threat was at Skyline College.
More than 1,000 people showed up to Congresswoman Anna Eshoo's town hall meeting on health care reform. Apparently, people booed and cheered in equal amounts…
While California public schools suffer, San Mateo County private schools are flourishing. Students are starting off the new school year with a new gym, a new science building, and a new football program, to name a few.
SamTrans is sparing the Coastside from losing its bus routes after all. No word on how East Palo Also will be affected or not.
The Mommy e-mail is re-circulating in South San Francisco, just in time for the election.
Seems that money isn’t an issue in Woodside elections. Despite the fact that all three candidates are running unopposed, the Council decided to go ahead and shell out the $12 grand to hold an election so that residents can actually vote the three unopposed candidates into office. Watch Dog likes this a lot more than appointing a Supervisor for a decade without an election... hint, hint.
